Spring 1999

A new century, a new millennium, a new ME

Pray for ambitious new strategy posed by inter-faith group

What do the Pope, Oprah Winfrey, and Bob Hope have in common?
Give up? They are among a select group of people being contacted to lend support to the Marriage Encounter movement as it enters a new century. Though Pope John Paul and Oprah are both unmarried, each claims a dedication to things that renew the spirit. Plus, their name recognition is valuable.
Why Bob Hope? He and his wife Dolores have enjoyed a Marriage Encounter Weekend and strongly support ME. Like the Pope and Winfrey, entertainer Hope is recognized around the globe.
Bold venture
Just who is bold enough to attempt such a public relations venture: The Inter-Faith Awareness & Publicity Committee (IFAP) of Worldwide Marriage Encounter. WWME, originally organized as a Catholic association, is the parent body of a number of expressions, including Lutheran Marriage Encounter.
Besides Catholic and Lutheran expressions, WWME embraces 10 additional faiths:
Baptist, Episcopal, Mennonite Brethren, Orthodox, Presbyterian, Reformed, Seventh Day Adventist, United Church of Canada, United Church of Christ, and United Methodist.
Gathering last fall in Chicago, the IFAP committee examined initiatives for the coming millennium that would propel a transformed ME ministry down the path of reaching the world with God’s love.
Two-pronged approach
In a two-pronged approach, IFAP has contacted both Francis Cardinal George of the Catholic diocese of Chicago and Oprah Winfrey, popular TV talk show host. Cardinal George, who is a presenting priest for the Catholic expression of ME, was asked to seek papal support.
Oprah was requested, in behalf of the 12 denominations represented by WWME, to air information about the benefits of Marriage Encounter to society as a whole.
Other influential individuals on IFAP’s list to be contacted are “Focus on the Family” host Dr. James Dobson, radio commentator Paul Harvey, Hour of Power speaker Robert Schuler, Marriage Savers author Mike McManis, and psychologists Ken and Margie Blanchard.

  Some romantic evening . . .
You may find recruitment in a variety of methods--
like IFAP's "Meal & Spiel"

A host of exciting new tools to recruit couples for Marriage Encounter Weekends are in the planning stages. The innovative ideas come from the collective minds of Worldwide Marriage Encounter’s Inter-Faith Awareness & Publicity Committee (IFAP).
High on the list of recruiting strategies being proposed by IFAP is an “Evening of Romance.” This is a dinner event conducted by a local ME community to which prospective couples are invited. Following an evening dinner in a romantic environment, guests are presented with information about a coming Marriage Encounter Weekend, along with registration forms.
Though not a new concept, the romantic evening tactic, dubbed “Meal and Spiel” by IFAP members, is being emphasized because of its effectiveness, as revealed in a recent WWME survey (see chart below).
Lots of goodies
An inviting handbook is being prepared to provide communities with a romantic dinner procedure, ready-to-print bulletin inserts, pulpit talk and information talk outlines, personal inviting techniques, video presentation guidelines, and gift registration certificates.
Other strategies include a how-to-conduct-a-Weekend guide, radio announcements, Internet publicity, bumper stickers, and posters. A video series is also in the mix.
